Gamboa

Juan Gamboa is a full-time, NYC-based yoga teacher who has been teaching yoga since 2009. He started practicing yoga in the late 90s when he stumbled upon a walk-up studio on Lafayette Street called Jivamukti. He attended his first yoga class with deep skepticism and almost incurable anxiety.

Before teaching full time, he worked in corporate America. With an undergraduate and Master’s degree in Chemistry, Juan’s former lives have involved working as a scientist for Merck, Sanofi, and Celgene. He’s also spent time in the financial services in the role of Research Manager for a private investment research group. He was laid off in the financial crisis in 2008 and got certified when he found himself at an intersection in his life. He was called to a deeper purpose – love for wellness and travel and a calling to serve his community. He has a daily self practice to help manage anxiety and balance work with play. In class, Juan imparts what he’s learned from practicing over 20 years.

After receiving his 200-hour yoga certification at Sonic Yoga in 2009, Juan went on to get a 100-hour certification in Restorative Yoga, a 200-hour certification in MNDFL training for meditation, and a 75-hour certification from Kula Yoga Project. He attended a 2 week pilgrimage to India with his teacher Raghunath in 2015. In June 2020, he launched the P.A.R.C. (Practice And ReCover) initiative in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to serve communities in Harlem, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Tribeca, West Village, and his own backyard. He has also led and co-led retreats all over the world: Dubai, Bangkok, Mexico, Cartagena, Koh Samui, Goa, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Santa Catalina. However, he is probably most at home in his tiny West Village
space, a part of New York City he has called home for the past 10 years.

Questions. Answers.

What makes a house a home?

A place to sleep, rest and play. And comfort food. (It always goes back to food with
me).

What are you most passionate about outside of yoga?

New York/Architecture/Real Estate.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

Real leaders lead with love. (Cleo Wade)

When have you felt the most proud?

I co-founded the P.A.R.C. Initiative with doctors and dancers of New York City in 2020 in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. It served neighborhoods from Harlem to Tribeca, and the Upper East Side to the West Village without one single Covid-19  transmission.
