Meet Karmen Alexander, a Brooklyn-based yoga teacher who first found the practice at a young age as a way to navigate family trauma, to process grief, and ground herself.

She enjoys working with curious, open-hearted people who are willing to explore themselves through movement and breath. Her classes blend vinyasa flow, pranayama, and restorative postures to create a supportive, strengthening, and lighthearted space where students can feel at ease in their bodies and minds. Off the mat, you’ll often find her with her nose in a book or browsing the local farmers market for fresh produce.

Questions. Answers.

What makes a house a home?

I think what makes a house a home is the people and energy that inhabit the space. A home is welcoming, kind, and accepting. It’s a place where you can truly be yourself without worrying about judgment or ridicule. It’s a space that is cared for, nurtured, and filled with intention. A is created through love, safety, and connection. It doesn’t have to be a physical place at all, it can be the people who make you feel seen and supported. Friends, family, and loved ones can create that same sense of comfort, belonging, and peace.

What about teaching inspires you?

I’m most inspired by the possibility of creating a life that feels meaningful and aligned with who I am. Seeing others pursue their passions motivates me to keep working toward my own dreams and reminds me of what’s possible. I’m inspired to teach yoga because I love helping people feel good in their bodies, building community, and creating space for people to reconnect with themselves. I’m also inspired by yogic philosophy and how its teachings extend beyond the mat.

What is the biggest goal you want to accomplish in the next year?

I really want to become established as a yoga teacher, ideally with a part-time teaching position at a studio while also exploring other avenues like private clients, retreats, and travel yoga. My goal is to build a sustainable and fulfilling yoga practice that continues to grow over time. I also want to gain more confidence in my ability to pursue my goals and become more comfortable using my voice.

When have you felt the most proud?

I feel the most proud when I accomplish a goal that I set for myself, even a small one. I feel the most proud when I’m surrounded with friends and family who support me in reaching my goals. I feel proud at the end of teaching a yoga class to friends and get validation that they enjoyed the experience. I feel proud when I create space for people to come together in community and share love and laughter.
