Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a beginner, virtual yoga classes offer a flexible way to explore and grow your practice. These online sessions are a convenient alternative to in-person classes, making it easier to maintain a regular practice on your own schedule.

ONEYOGAHOUSE offers enriching virtual experiences through a comprehensive on-demand library. We offer a range of durations to suit your schedule and needs, including 15-20 minute sessions, 45-minute classes, and longer sessions of 60-75 minutes. Whether you have just a short window of time or can commit to a longer practice, there’s an option for you. Reset your yoga journey with foundational classes, explore class bundles that target specific poses and parts of the body, or discover the benefits of asana, meditation, pranayama, and reflection.

Here’s an in-depth look at how to make the most of your virtual yoga experience.

What are some of the benefits of virtual yoga classes?

They’re convenient and flexible

One of the biggest advantages of virtual yoga is the ability to practice anytime, anywhere. Whether you’re at home, traveling, or on a break at work, you can fit in a session that suits your schedule, energy levels, and specific goals.

You get access to a variety of instructors and styles

Online platforms open up a world of yoga styles and teachers that may not be available locally. You can explore different disciplines, from Vinyasa and Hatha to Ashtanga and Yin, and find a teacher whose style resonates with you.

It’s more cost-effective

Virtual classes often cost less than in-person sessions. Plus, you save on commuting costs and time, making it a more economical option.

You can practice comfortably and privately

Practicing yoga in the comfort of your home can increase your relaxation and focus. You have the freedom to create a personal, distraction-free environment and avoid the self-consciousness that may arise when unaccustomed to practicing in a group setting.

5 tips for a great virtual yoga experience

1. Create a dedicated space

Select a part of your home where you can practice without interruptions. This could be a spare room, a corner in your bedroom, or even a section of your living room. Make sure there’s enough room for you to move freely—you should be able to stretch out in all directions without hitting furniture or walls, and the space should comfortably accommodate your mat and props.

If you want to set a relaxing vibe, create a peaceful environment with soft lighting, candles, and essential oils to the ambiance. Keep your mat, blocks, straps, bolsters, and any other props you use within easy reach. Having everything in one place saves time and helps you stay in the flow of your practice.

2. Check your tech beforehand

A reliable internet connection is essential for streaming live classes or watching pre-recorded sessions. Aim for a high-speed connection to avoid buffering and lag. Use a device with a good-quality screen and speakers, like a laptop, tablet, or smart TV. Ensure the device is fully charged or plugged in to avoid interruptions during your session, and position the screen at eye level to maintain good posture while watching.

3. Engage with the community

Many studios host virtual workshops, challenges, and events which can be great opportunities to deepen your practice, learn new techniques, and connect with others who share your interests. Participate actively and don’t be afraid to reach out to fellow attendees! If you’re attending a retreat, virtual classes offer a great option for practicing with the studio in preparation, leading up to the event—and also an easy way to seamlessly extend the zen post-retreat.

Whenever possible, ask and search for live classes that may be offered over the Holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day) when a large portion of the population may be traveling and seeking to practice from home. These live sessions often include real-time interaction with the instructor and other participants, and you can use the chat to introduce yourself, connect with others and share your intentions for the class, or ask questions.

4. Listen to your body

In the absence of in-person guidance from an instructor, it’s even more important to be attuned to your body’s signals. Start with gentle warm-up exercises to prepare your muscles and joints for more intense poses, and pay attention to how your body feels.

Every day is different, and your body might not always be capable of the same level of intensity. Honor your current physical and mental state, and don’t push yourself into poses that feel uncomfortable or painful. It’s perfectly fine to modify poses or take breaks when needed. Your breath is a powerful indicator of how your body is coping with a pose. If you find yourself holding your breath or breathing shallowly, it may be a sign that you’re pushing too hard. Use your breath as a guide, and back off if needed to maintain steady, deep breaths.

Take advantage of your space—use mirrors or video recordings of yourself to check your form and don’t hesitate to use props to support your practice. For example, if you can’t reach the floor in a forward bend, use a block to bring the floor closer to you.

Note: It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, especially if you’re practicing with live classes or watching recorded sessions. Remember that everyone’s body is different, and your yoga journey is unique. Focus on your progress and personal experience rather than trying to match someone else’s performance.

5. Set a regular routine

A regular schedule helps you build discipline, maintain motivation, and seamlessly integrate yoga into your daily life. Treat it like an in-person class. Pick a time of day that works best for you and set aside specific times in your calendar to practice. Whether it’s first thing in the morning to energize your day or in the evening to unwind, consistency helps establish a habit.

Start by clarifying what you want to achieve with your yoga practice. Whether it’s improving flexibility, reducing stress, building strength, or cultivating mindfulness, having clear goals can help you stay focused and motivated. You can alternate between different types of classes, such as Vinyasa for a dynamic flow, Yin for deep stretching and release, Sculpt for a hit of cardio and strength, Pilates Mat to deepen your connection to your powerhouse (core), and restorative for relaxation. Variety keeps your practice balanced and engaging.

Finally, combine your yoga practice with another daily habit to reinforce the routine. For example, practicing yoga right after brushing your teeth in the morning or after your evening shower can make it easier to stick with.
