ONEYOGAHOUSE

By Cara Hutto

ONEYOGAHOUSE has been proud to call DUMBO home since 2021.

Short for ‘Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass’, DUMBO sits between Brooklyn Heights and Vinegar Hill, where historic cobblestone streets meet sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. Once a hub of industrial warehouses and factories, many of its brick loft buildings have been converted into art galleries, boutiques, and some of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants.

We may be biased, but we think DUMBO is one of the best neighborhoods to explore before or after a yoga class. Whether you’re heading out after an early morning Fiery ONE or winding down after a restorative evening class, there’s something worth discovering at any hour.

Here’s our guide to the best things to do in DUMBO:

1. Grab a quick coffee or enjoy a sit-down brunch

DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights are home to dozens of excellent cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. Here are a few of our favorite neighborhood spots for a quick coffee before a morning class or a leisurely brunch post-flow:

Walk uphill to French bakery L’Appartement 4F for an espresso and hand-rolled pain au chocolat or pistachio rose croissant.

L’Appartement 4F brings the essence of a Parisian bakery to Brooklyn Heights and the West Village with our hand-rolled croissants, slow-fermented sourdough breads, and artisanal pastries.

2. Walk across the Manhattan Bridge

The Manhattan Bridge connects Chinatown to DUMBO, and it’s completely free to walk across. The 2.3-mile round-trip walk takes just under an hour, rewarding you with stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge, East River, and downtown Manhattan skyline. Just be prepared for a bit of noise and the occasional rumble as subway trains pass alongside the pedestrian path.

3. Walk (or Run) Across the Brooklyn Bridge

One way or the other, the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-see when traveling to Brooklyn. It’s not just an enjoyable experience for tourists; many born-and-bred New Yorkers find themselves still charmed by the bridge. There’s even a dedicated pedestrian walkway on the Brooklyn Bridge, above the roaring car traffic, so it’s a wonderful stroll.

Prefer a run? Join Welda Club on the last Thursday of each month for a 3 mile loop over the iconic bridge before jumping into our 65-minute Yoga for Runners. During marathon training season, we host our very own OYH Run Club on Tuesday mornings, followed by an express 45-minute runner’s yoga and mobility flow.

4. Explore Brooklyn Bridge Park

Spanning 85 acres along the waterfront, Brooklyn Bridge Park offers walking paths, gardens, playgrounds, and lawns perfect for reading a book, catching up with a friend, or enjoying a picnic before or after class. We like to think of it as our studio’s backyard! If you’re looking for a place to spread out, head to Harbor View Lawn or Bridge View Lawn on Pier 1, the Central Lawn on Pier 3, or Liberty Lawn on Pier 6. Be sure to stop by Jane’s Carousel, a restored 1922 wooden merry-go-round on the water.

5. Ride the ferry

The NYC Ferry is one of the best ways to take in the city’s architecture without splurging on a sightseeing cruise. For just $4 per ride, it connects Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. On a nice weather day, head to the top deck with a drink from the onboard bar and enjoy the breeze and panoramic views.

6. Snap a picture of one of NYC’s most iconic views

One of Brooklyn’s most photographed intersections, the corner of Washington and Water Streets, is home to one of the most unique views in New York City: the Manhattan Bridge perfectly framed between DUMBO’s iconic brick buildings, with the Empire State Building visible beneath the bridge’s arch. It’s a gorgeous spot, so be prepared to share it with other visitors.

7. Find a vintage treasure at the Brooklyn Flea Market

Every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (spring through December), the Brooklyn Flea transforms the DUMBO Archway into an open-air market filled with one-of-a-kind finds. Browse more than 40 vendors selling vintage clothing and jewelry, antique furniture and home goods, local art, handmade crafts, and more. When you need a break, grab a snack from one of the food vendors and sit at a picnic table nearby.

8. Wander through the Time Out Market

If you’re looking to refuel after class, Time Out Market is a great place to sample bites from a curated lineup of local restaurants. We recommend stopping by Jacob’s Pickles, Bark Barbecue, Clinton St. Baking Company, or Chote Miya before heading upstairs to the fifth-floor rooftop. The terrace has unobstructed views of the East River, making it a great spot to watch the sun set.

9. Explore DUMBO’s art scene

You could easily spend an entire afternoon popping into galleries and theaters throughout the neighborhood. Visit St. Ann’s Warehouse, a performing arts theater housed in a former tobacco warehouse, check out rotating exhibitions at the all women’s artist-run A.I.R. Gallery, or stop by Smack Mellon, a nonprofit arts organization that showcases work from emerging artists.

10. Hit the local shops

Whether you prefer higher-end trendy boutiques or smaller local artisan shops, there are plenty of shopping options for everybody. Here are just a few of our favorite stores:

  • L’Ensemble, a curated clothing boutique with women’s and menswear
  • Fishs Eddy for vintage and signature dishes and kitchenware (and affordable coffee!)
  • Thea Grant for heirloom-quality fine jewelry and unique keepsakes

11. Relax at a calming spa

Just a few steps from ONEYOGAHOUSE is Bamford Wellness Spa inside the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. Choose from an array of natural treatments including detoxifying facials, warm stone massages, sauna wraps, and full-body clay treatments. Post-spa, treat yourself to a blowout at Salon718 – OYH students can get a one-time $20 off coupon with proof of a same-day yoga class.
