Hot yoga is a popular practice for many reasons: it challenges the body, promotes detoxification, and is said to improve flexibility and cardiovascular health. Traditional hot yoga studios, like classic Bikram-style classes, rely on high ambient heat, often exceeding 100°F, to warm muscles and create that intense, sweaty environment.
While this heat can feel energizing, it also forces the body to focus on cooling itself, leaving your mind and muscles struggling to keep up. At ONEYOGAHOUSE, we take a different approach—one rooted in science, safety, and mindful movement.
How heat impacts the body
Some assume that the hotter the room, the more flexible your body becomes. But extreme external heat primarily signals to the central nervous system to focus on thermoregulation: cooling the body to maintain a safe core temperature. It becomes difficult to settle into poses when you’re hyperfixated on how hot you are.
The external heat helps your muscles feel loose, but it doesn’t warm the essential connective tissues—ligaments, tendons, joints—in the same way internal heat generated through movement does. In other words, cranking up the thermostat doesn’t necessarily benefit your joints. Mindful, active movement does.
Our gentle approach
At OYH, our goal isn’t to push the thermometer or your body to its limit. Our infrared-heated classes are gently warmed, complemented by steam and humidity rather than forced heat. This creates a comfortable environment that supports the body without overstressing it.
The gentle heat
- Allows the nervous system to focus on mobility and alignment, rather than just cooling
- Encourages an active range of motion instead of relying on passive muscle flexibility
- Reduces the risk of overstretching or injury while still giving the benefits of heat
Students often notice that
- Poses feel more accessible without the exhaustion of extreme heat
- Holding and flowing through postures feels more grounded and stable (the sweat you break from building heat from within won’t leave you playing slip and slide on your mat)
- Recovery is faster, and there’s less post-class fatigue or dizziness
Think of it like this: Muscles are rubber bands—they loosen quickly with heat—but joints are hinges—they need movement to stay healthy. By focusing on internal activation and gentle heat, we help your body build strength and flexibility that lasts.
Tips for practicing in gentle heat
If you’re new to hot yoga, take it easy. Start with a shorter class or give yourself extra rest in the early weeks. During class, gently rotate your wrists, ankles, or shoulders before each pose to warm the joints. These micro-movements seem minor, but over time they can make a big difference in mobility and comfort. You might notice our instructors often include this active joint work in their warmups with this intention.
Tips to keep in mind when practicing hot yoga
Focus on your breath
Deep, steady breaths calm the mind and generate internal warmth. Breath awareness can also guide you into poses safely, helping you move without strain. Your instructor can guide you further on pranayama practices designed to either build heat or help cool down.
Move slowly into poses
Give your body time to warm from the inside out. Rushing into stretches may give the impression you’re more flexible, but it can stress the body. Gradual movement helps your muscles and joints adapt safely while building lasting mobility.
Hydrate wisely
Fill up your water bottle or buy a coconut water from the studio fridge! Even gentle heat increases sweating, so make sure to drink water before, during, and after class to maintain energy and prevent dizziness during your practice.
Listen to your body
Your limits can change day to day. Pay attention to your comfort, alignment, and how each pose feels. Gentle heat creates the space to explore your range of motion safely, and respecting your body ensures a more sustainable practice.
