Honor Your Mental Health EVERY Month Through the Practice of Yoga
By: Cara Hutto
World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10th, was a moment to reflect on the importance of mental wellbeing globally. While the day has passed, its significance carries on throughout the year as we continue to honor mental health awareness. At ONEYOGAHOUSE, we recognize that mental health isn’t confined to one single day—it’s an ongoing journey, and one that’s deeply connected to the practice of yoga and mindfulness.
Yoga is more than just a physical practice, it’s a holistic system that unites the mind, body, and spirit. Given our world’s current events, it’s no surprise that stress, anxiety, and mental strain are on the rise. Yoga offers a powerful way to restore inner peace and emotional balance amidst life’s pressures. By integrating breathwork, movement, and meditation, yoga encourages us to slow down, reflect, and nurture our mental wellbeing, one mindful moment at a time.
Reflecting on mental health before, during, and after yoga
ONEYOGAHOUSE’s focus on mental health gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the ways yoga can be a refuge for those seeking emotional clarity. The practice teaches us how to sit with discomfort, release tension, and reconnect with ourselves on a deeper level. Whether it’s through a grounding flow that brings awareness to the body or a meditation session that quiets the mind, yoga encourages us to find stillness in a world that often feels chaotic.
Yoga invites us to stay present and mindful throughout the practice, making it a perfect opportunity to check in with our mental health as we move. By paying attention to our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations during a session, we can deepen our self-awareness and understand how our mental state evolves moment by moment.
As you roll out your mat…
Before stepping onto your mat, pause and check in with yourself. How are you feeling today emotionally and mentally? Are you carrying stress, tension, or anxiety from the day? Or are you feeling peaceful and centered? Your self-reflection doesn’t need to be complicated—simply close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and allow yourself to notice any thoughts or emotions that surface without judgment.
Acknowledging your mental state at the start of practice helps create a sense of intention. Whether you’re aiming to release stress, find calm, or simply move with awareness, this reflection allows you to approach your session mindfully, choosing a practice that aligns with your needs.
During the flow…
As you transition between poses, notice how your body and mind respond. Are there particular poses where you feel tension, frustration, or resistance? Or moments where you feel calm, open, and at ease? Our mental state often manifests in the way we experience the practice—tightness in a certain area may reflect stress or anxiety, while ease might signal a release of emotional burden.
This awareness is key to practicing with intention. If your mind wanders to worries or to-do lists, gently bring your focus back to your breath. Each inhale and exhale serves as an anchor to the present moment, grounding you in the here and now. Rather than trying to clear your mind entirely, allow yourself to observe your thoughts and emotions with curiosity, not judgment, as they come and go throughout the practice.
In moments of stillness—whether in a resting pose like Child’s Pose or during Savasana at the end of class—reflect on what’s surfaced during the session. Has your mind quieted or are emotions bubbling up? Stillness often reveals what lies beneath the surface, and it’s common for feelings of vulnerability, calmness, or even clarity to emerge. Allow these emotions to flow without resistance, trusting that the practice is creating space for healing.
After you say namaste…
Once your session is over, revisit your mental check-in. Has your emotional state shifted? Do you feel lighter or more grounded? This post-practice reflection is a moment of gratitude—for showing up for yourself, for whatever you’ve let go, and for any clarity you’ve gained.
Through consistent reflection, yoga becomes a tool not only for physical health but also for emotional self-awareness. Over time, these mindful check-ins before and after practice can help you better understand the patterns in your mental health, allowing you to navigate your emotions with more compassion and insight.

THE FIERY ONE
This is a heated Vinyasa flow experience that is intentional, fun, and guided by the rhythm of the breath. Expect lots of movement with a focus on functional exercises. It’s an open-level class that’s powered by radiant infrared panels and an air purification system to minimize airborne dust, pollen, and germs.
THE ALIGNED ONE
This room-temperature Vinyasa flow is intelligently sequenced and challenging but at a slower pace to ease you into the practice. Don’t worry, you’ll still break a sweat by building heat from within.
THE BLISSED ONE
This is a nourishing and creative 75-min experience curated to regulate the nervous system, release stagnant energy and toxins, and reduce stress through lymphwork, yin, sound, and restorative modalities. Don’t be afraid to jump around and let loose!
THE RESTORED ONE
Slow down and restore in this Yin-style class. We use props to support you in passively held postures for a sustained period. You’ll lengthen connective tissue to enhance your range of motion and regulate your nervous system. Benefits of this style include deep relaxation, improved sleep and digestion, and faster muscle recovery.
THE CENTERED ONE, MAT PILATES
Our pilates classes will challenge you in exercises that chisel your abs, tone your glutes, and sculpt long, lean muscles. You will use your own body weight, yoga blocks, magic circles, and resistance bands.
THE THERAPEUTIC ONE
This class combines a gentle slow flow and restorative yin postures and closes with a deep meditation session to explore the quietude of your mind.
THE STILL ONE - SOUND MEDITATION
This is a heated Vinyasa flow experience that is intentional, fun, and guided by the rhythm of the breath. Expect lots of movement with a focus on functional exercises. It’s an open-level class that’s powered by radiant infrared panels and an air purification system to minimize airborne dust, pollen, and germs.
THE STUDIOUS ONE - MASTER CLASS
Taught by senior teachers, master classes are an opportunity for intermediate yogis and teachers to deepen their practice through an extended study of the asanas. You’ll incorporate more advanced postures, yoga philosophy, and anatomical education.
THE FOUNDATIONAL ONE
This class breaks down the fundamentals of key yoga postures for both people who have never taken a yoga class and practitioners who have some knowledge of the practice but would like to renew and strengthen their foundation.
THE EMBODIED ONE - SOMATICS
Explore somatic movement exercises to help re-educate the way your brain moves, holds, and senses your muscles. You’ll commence class with an extended savasana and gradually enter into yoga asanas.
THE INTERNAL ONE
In this internal strength class using the Kinstretch® Method, focus on the determinants of your movement (i.e. ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue) rather than the external organization of movement (i.e. specific yoga poses). Through self-assessment, you’ll learn about your current range of motion and exercise more control.
THE SCULPTED ONE
Combining plyometrics, fun beats, and a touch of cardio, hit the mat and sweat during this open-level, high-energy experience and sculpt every major muscle group.
