ONEYOGAHOUSE

Tree Pose, or Vrksasana in Sanskrit, is a grounding and balancing posture that symbolizes stability and growth. This yoga pose fosters a deep connection between the body and the mind, encouraging focus and calm while improving balance and coordination. Tree Pose invites practitioners to cultivate patience and inner strength as they imagine themselves firmly rooted in the ground as a tree with the arms extended upward, symbolizing branches.

How do you do Tree Pose?

Step 1.

Begin standing at the top of your mat in tadasana.

Step 2.

Shift the weight onto your left leg as you lift your right knee up towards your chest and externally rotate your hip, opening the knee towards the right.

Step 3.

Perhaps using your hands to assist, connect the sole of your right foot to the inner thigh line of your left leg (fine to bring to inner calf).

Step 4.

Hands can find Anjali mudra at heart center or reach the prayer overhead.

Step 5.

Isometrically engage the midline by pressing the foot into the thigh and thigh into the foot. Keep your pelvis neutral by lengthening the tailbone down and feeling the pubic bone in line with the tailbone.

Step 6.

Use your drishti gaze in order to assist with your balance. You can look straight ahead or slightly lift your gaze for an added challenge.

Benefits of Tree Pose

Improve focus, stability, and balance by requiring you to stand on one leg while engaging your core and stabilizing muscles. It improves proprioception (awareness of body position)
Strengthens the legs and core, particularly the ankles, calves, thighs, and glutes. Additionally, the core muscles are engaged to maintain balance and keep the spine aligned, improving both leg and core strength over time
Helps calm the mind and improve mental clarity. It encourages mindfulness and can be a great way to practice staying present in the moment, reducing mental distractions.
It helps develop body awareness and teaches practitioners to stay grounded while maintaining inner calm, which can reduce stress and anxiety.

Variations of Tree Pose

Arm position: Hands can be on hips, in a mudra, lifted overhead, or in a prayer behind your back
Kickstand your foot against the supporting ankle and the ground for balance or connect foot to calf/lower on leg for a more accessible place to balance
Standing Half Lotus: Bring your foot to the hip crease and let your knee lengthen down (instead of foot to inner thigh).
