Revolved Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose, or Parivrtta Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana in Sanskrit, is a challenging balancing posture that combines flexibility, strength, and deep spinal rotation. This standing yoga pose engages the core, legs, and stabilizing muscles to maintain equilibrium while twisting the torso. Through twisting, this pose promotes spinal mobility, detoxification, and shoulder opening.
How do you do Revolved Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose?
Step 1.
Start standing at the top of your mat. Begin to shift your weight onto your left foot as you draw your right knee up towards your chest. Bring your right hand to your hip for stability.
Step 2.
Grab a hold of your right big toe with your peace fingers (index and middle fingers) of your left hand. Extend your right leg out in front of you as much as possible. Keep your core and leg muscles active so your spine can stay tall, shoulders stacked over hips.
Step 3.
Inhale and lengthen your spine. As you exhale, take your gaze to the right and begin to twist your torso to follow your gaze. Revolve the left rib cage to the right and extend your right arm behind you.
Step 4.
Continue to stand up tall, rooting down through your left foot, and reaching the crown of your head up. Find oppositional length between both hands and expand across your chest. Keep kicking your right heel forward as you reach the right arm back.
Step 5.
Keep your hips level and steady, and avoid letting one be higher than the other.
Step 6.
Finish the twist by gazing at your right hand if you have your balance.
Step 7.
To exit, unravel your torso back to center and release your right foot to step down onto the mat, returning to Tadasana.
