In today’s fast-paced world, many of us have become disconnected from our bodies. Daily stress, traumatic experiences, and overwhelm often drive us out of our bodily homes, leaving us feeling dissociated and detached. This disconnection from our physical selves can lead to emotional numbness, addiction, and sabotaging behaviors. It also cuts us off from the vital non-verbal signals our bodies send about our true needs and desires, preventing us from fully understanding and responding to ourselves.
But what exactly is embodiment, and why is it so important?
And, how does reconnecting with our bodies lead to greater freedom in our lives?
As a somatic coach dedicated to helping women reclaim their freedom and cultivate thriving relationships, I’m often asked these questions. Let’s explore them together.

Understanding Embodiment
Embodiment is the experience of fully inhabiting your body and being aware of your internal self. In other words, it is when you are experiencing life through a deep connection with your physical self, and being able to express outwardly, that you think and feel inwardly.
Embodiment is the antidote to dissociation, which occurs when we disconnect from our bodily experience due to overwhelming emotions, trauma, or stress. Dissociation often persists long after the initial cause has passed, leading to behavioral patterns that distance us further from our bodies, such as addiction and self-medication. When we operate from this place of disconnection, we’re on autopilot, rather than navigating life based on our true feelings and intentions.
Why Embodiment is Essential for Healing and Freedom
At the core of these patterns are blocked emotions—overwhelming feelings that we avoid facing. These unresolved emotions can stifle our authentic expression, limit our potential, and harm our relationships. When faced with difficulty or discomfort, we often retreat from our bodies as a way to protect ourselves.
Somatic practices, which focus on internal body awareness, help counteract dissociation and reclaim your connection to your body—essentially becoming embodied. When you are embodied, you experience life more fully, allowing you to thrive in your relationships and work without being held back by blocked emotions or past trauma.

Genuine transformation comes from flowing with the material as it arises, rather than forcing. Trust the process.
The First Step is Slowing Down
Spiritual texts and formal studies alike point to the same essential advice: slow down. Slowing down allows us to explore beneath the surface and uncover the root of our patterns. It creates the safety and space necessary for us to truly listen to our bodies and understand their signals.
In a culture of urgency, even our attempts at healing can become rushed, with many seeking quick fixes. However, true growth cannot be expedited. Evolution requires us to remain steady and patient. Genuine transformation comes from flowing with the material as it arises, rather than forcing. Trust the process.
Once you’ve slowed down and created space, you can fully engage in the somatic practices of expression and integration that lead to true embodiment. These are the practices I guide my clients through, fostering profound healing over time.
