The half chair pose, or Ardha Utkatasana in Sanskrit, is a challenging yoga pose that requires both strength and endurance. With one leg flexed and crossed over the standing leg, the practitioner must engage the thighs and glutes while activating the core for stability. Half Chair Pose can be used in a warm-up for the legs and core, or as a transition to even more challenging postures such as Eagle Pose.
How do you do Half Chair Pose?
Step 1.
Begin standing at the top of your mat in Mountain Pose.
Step 2.
Transfer your weight onto your left foot as you pick up your right foot.
Step 3.
Cross your right ankle over your left knee, creating a figure 4 shape with your legs. Flex your right foot to protect your knee joint. Bend your left (standing) knee, sitting your hips down and back as if onto an imaginary chair.
Step 4.
Keep your spine long and your chest lifted. Engage your core muscles and ensure your hips remain level.
Step 5.
Gaze straight ahead on a fixed point to help maintain your balance, placing hands on your hips, in a prayer position at your chest, or extend them forward and up.
Step 6.
To exit, inhale and straighten your standing leg, lower your lifted leg to return to Mountain Pose. Repeat on the other side.
