ONEYOGAHOUSE

By: Cara Hutto

Finding what feels good for your body is a core principle of yoga. My yoga teacher and friend, Sabrina, always begins class with a moment of reflection, encouraging us to “take what you need, and leave what you don’t.” In practice, this might mean that some days, you feel brave enough to tackle the peak pose, while on others, you might ease into a child’s pose halfway through your sun salutations.

This philosophy extends to food as well—find and cook what feels good for you. On low-energy days, you might grab a quick protein bar, while on more relaxed days, you may take the time to whip up something more nourishing. The key is to honor what your body needs in the moment.

These recipes are designed to be quick, nutritious, and satisfying, giving you the nourishment you need to stay energized and continue reaping the benefits of your yoga practice. Whether you’re rolling out of bed for a fiery morning vinyasa flow or coming home after a relaxing yin session, these post-yoga breakfasts will help you recharge and prepare for whatever the day brings.

Why post-yoga nutrition matters

What you eat after yoga plays an essential role in your recovery and overall well being. During your practice, your body burns through energy stores, and the physical demands can cause minor muscle strain. Refueling with the right nutrients ensures you recover properly and feel your best. Here’s how being more mindful of your post-yoga meals can support your body:

You can replenish glycogen stores

The carbohydrates you eat after yoga are crucial for restoring glycogen, the energy reserve your muscles rely on during physical activity. This helps combat fatigue and keeps your energy levels stable.

You can repair muscles

Yoga may not be as intense as weightlifting, but it still stresses your muscles, especially in challenging poses. Consuming protein post-practice helps repair and rebuild these fibers, promoting strength and flexibility over time.

You’ll rehydrate

You work up a sweat in yoga, especially heated or dynamic flows like vinyasa and hot yoga. Drinking water and eating foods rich in electrolytes (like potassium and sodium) help restore your fluid balance and prevent dehydration.

You can boost your immunity

After a vigorous session, your immune system can benefit from a nutrient boost. Whole foods rich in vitamins and minerals—especially fruits and vegetables—help fortify your defenses and keep your body strong and resilient.

5 breakfast recipes to help you refuel and recover

The key to effective post-yoga nutrition is balance. Combining proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates will help replenish your body’s energy stores, repair muscles, and keep you feeling centered. With that in mind, let’s dive into some nourishing recipes that are perfect for your post-yoga routine.

Green goddess smoothie bowl

A smoothie bowl is a quick and versatile way to refuel. This creamy green goddess smoothie bowl is packed with nutrients to help you recover and feel revitalized. It’s rich in healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. Plus, the spinach and avocado provide vitamins A, C, and E, while chia seeds offer omega-3s and fiber.

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 cup almond milk (or your preferred plant-based milk)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • Toppings: granola, sliced fruits, coconut flakes, hemp seeds

Instructions

In a blender, combine the frozen banana, spinach, avocado, almond milk, and chia seeds. Blend until smooth. If the consistency is too thick, add more milk. Pour into a bowl and add your favorite toppings.

Egg and turkey breakfast burrito

This breakfast burrito is a satisfying, high-protein option to kickstart your morning recovery. It’s packed with lean turkey, eggs, and fiber-rich veggies, providing the perfect blend of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs to keep you full and energized.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup turkey sausage
  • 1/4 cup black beans, rinsed
  • 1/4 cup bell peppers, diced
  • 1/4 avocado, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 whole wheat tortilla
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Salsa or hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

In a non-stick pan, cook the turkey sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked, about 4-5 minutes. Add diced bell peppers to the pan and sauté for 2 minutes until they begin to soften. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, season with salt and pepper, and pour them into the pan with the turkey and peppers. Scramble until cooked through. Warm the tortilla in a separate pan or microwave. Layer the scrambled egg mixture, black beans, avocado slices, and shredded cheese in the center of the tortilla. Fold the sides of the tortilla inward and roll it into a burrito. Top with salsa or hot sauce for extra flavor.

Turmeric and ginger recovery smoothie

Turmeric and ginger are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, making this smoothie an excellent choice to soothe sore muscles. This smoothie combines the hydrating benefits of coconut water with the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and ginger, while the pineapple adds natural sweetness and a dose of vitamin C to support your immune system.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup ice

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Avocado toast with hemp seeds

Classic avocado toast can be elevated with the addition of hemp seeds for an extra texture and protein boost. Avocados are rich in healthy fats and fiber, while hemp seeds provide a complete protein source. It’s simple to prepare and perfect for a light but healthy post-yoga snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 slices whole-grain bread
  • 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • A squeeze of lemon juice

Instructions

Toast the bread slices to your preferred crispness. Mash the avocado in a bowl, adding salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Spread the mashed avocado over the toasted bread. Sprinkle hemp seeds and red pepper flakes on top.

Berry and nut butter overnight oats

Overnight oats are a super convenient option if you practice yoga early in the morning and need a quick, nutritious breakfast afterward. They provide a balanced mix of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein, and the berries give you a boost of antioxidants.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1/2 cup mixed berries
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup

Instructions

In a jar or bowl, combine oats, almond milk, almond butter, and chia seeds.

Stir in the mixed berries and sweetener. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, give it a stir and enjoy.

ABOUT ONEYOGAHOUSE

oneyogahouse
90 Furman St
Brooklyn, NY 11201

We are a yoga, pilates, and sound meditation studio located in DUMBO (an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), next door to the 1Hotels in Brooklyn Bridge Park. As a community that prioritizes awakening our bodies, expanding our energy, and bringing movement to life, OYH offers a space designed to uplift and empower practitioners to ground themselves, undergo transformation, ignite their energy, and evolve in their yoga journey.

Driven by a passion for community, connection, and the transformative effects of yoga and meditation, yoga teacher and entrepreneur Anna Haddad founded OYH in 2020, and in the challenging landscape of the global COVID-19 pandemic, opened the Brooklyn location in September of 2021. Over the past several years, she’s built a team of some of New York’s most exceptional instructors. With safety, sustainability, and intentionality prioritized above all else, you can anticipate a yoga experience that’s not only accessible, but also mentally stimulating and geared towards personal growth.

We offer an array of classes suitable for every practice level.

We offer a diverse range of classes suited to practitioners of all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced yogis. Our yoga teachers come from all lineages and studies, from Katonah and Iyengar, to Vinyasa and Ashtanga. Whether you’re drawn to a hot, vigorous flow, a gentle, restorative practice, or a meditative sound therapy session, there’s something for everyone. Each class is thoughtfully designed to cater to different needs and preferences, ensuring that you find the practice that resonates with you.

Our most popular specialty classes include:

THE CENTERED ONE - MAT PILATES

Our pilates classes will challenge you in exercises that chisel your abs, tone your glutes, and sculpt long, lean muscles. You will use your own body weight, yoga blocks, magic circles, and resistance bands.

THE THERAPEUTIC ONE

This class combines a gentle slow flow and restorative yin postures and closes with a deep meditation session to explore the quietude of your mind.

THE FIERY ONE - HOT YOGA

This is a heated Vinyasa flow experience that is intentional, fun, and guided by the rhythm of the breath. Expect lots of movement with a focus on functional exercises. It’s an open-level class that’s powered by radiant infrared panels and an air purification system to minimize airborne dust, pollen, and germs.

THE STUDIOUS ONE - MASTER CLASS

Taught by senior teachers, master classes are an opportunity for intermediate yogis and teachers to deepen their practice through an extended study of the asanas. You’ll incorporate more advanced postures, yoga philosophy, and anatomical education.

THE FOUNDATIONAL ONE

This class breaks down the fundamentals of key yoga postures for both people who have never taken a yoga class and practitioners who have some knowledge of the practice but would like to renew and strengthen their foundation.

THE EMBODIED ONE - SOMATICS

Explore somatic movement exercises to help re-educate the way your brain moves, holds, and senses your muscles. You’ll commence class with an extended savasana and gradually enter into yoga asanas.

THE INTERNAL ONE

In this internal strength class using the Kinstretch® Method, focus on the determinants of your movement (i.e. ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue) rather than the external organization of movement (i.e. specific yoga poses). Through self-assessment, you’ll learn about your current range of motion and exercise more control.

THE ALIGNED ONE

Similar to The Fiery ONE, expect an open-level, but room temperature, Vinyasa class woven with elements of Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, or Katonah Yoga. These yoga classes are intelligently sequenced at a slower, sweeter pace to ease you into the practice, allowing time for your body to adapt to movement. You are sure to break a sweat by building heat from within.

In every class, the teacher will ease you into practice, allowing time for your body to adapt to the flow and temperature of the room. No class is exactly the same, but overall, you can expect emphasis on mindful movement, mobility, alignment, breathwork, and drishti—a focused gaze—cultivating a sense of presence and awareness on the mat. Our focus on breath allows you to deepen your practice, quiet the mind, and experience a profound sense of relaxation and inner peace. You’ll be encouraged to listen to your body, honor its limitations, and explore your edge with compassion.

SOUND MEDITATION

Sound has been used for its therapeutic qualities for centuries. Sound Meditation experiences at OYH will guide you through an experience of pranayama, vocalization, and visualization to prepare for deep listening. You will be encouraged to find a comfortable position, and with eyes closed, take in the sounds emitted from instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, varying chimes and bells, drums, etc. These instruments, intentionally sequenced, create a safe space for participants to enter a meditative state to down-regulate the nervous system and create a sense of ease and clarity.

Our holistic approach to community and wellness.

At OYH, you’re part of a supportive and inclusive community from day one. Whether you attend classes regularly or drop in occasionally, you’ll find camaraderie and encouragement from fellow practitioners and instructors alike. The studio fosters connections beyond the mat, offering workshops, events, retreats, and social gatherings to support local businesses (like brunch and oyster shucking) where you can connect with like-minded individuals and deepen your practice both on and off the mat.

Our holistic approach to wellness extends beyond movement. In addition to regular yoga and pilates classes, the studio offers workshops focused on nutrition, mindfulness, self-care, and personal development. Whether you’re interested in exploring the benefits of Ceremonial Grade Cacao, learning about the Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs) routine, or delving into pelvic floor therapy, there are ample opportunities to learn something new and nourish your body, mind, and soul.

Retreats offer immersive experiences that transcend the boundaries of the studio. ONEYOGAHOUSE retreats serve as rejuvenating getaways designed to allow participants to deepen their practice and forge new connections. Through carefully curated programs, attendees engage in daily yoga, breathwork, functional mobility, journaling, and meditation sessions, alongside modalities such as lymph work, kriyas, and vagal toning. Retreat members also enjoy chef-prepared group meals, outdoor adventures and exploration, cocktail hours, spa services, shopping and cultural trips, and more. Set in beautiful locations like Los Cabos, Mexico, Morocco, North Africa, and Montauk, New York, the retreat landscapes provide serene backdrops for self-reflection and relaxation.
