ONEYOGAHOUSE

By Liz Moore

The divine timing of how I entered into ONEYOGAHOUSE’s yoga teacher training seems too perfect. It was as if I was picked up and plopped right into training by the universe. I initially considered YTT in the spring of 2020, but in hindsight, I was just searching for an escape from the reality of the pandemic. A few years later, I had the opportunity to participate in a mini mentorship program on the eight limbs of yoga. This was coming off the heels of a few years of deep spiritual and introspective work, as well as a regular commitment to an asana practice, so I was eager to learn.

This transformed my relationship with yoga – I had not previously been aware that yoga encompassed so much more than just a physical practice. I felt my soul deeply resonate with the philosophy, the values, and the seamless integration of the physical, energetic, and spiritual. But I still didn’t see myself becoming a yoga teacher at this time. It took a couple more years of slowly disentangling myself from the expectations set upon me by my upbringing around my career path. But slowly, one decision at a time, I arrived at a clarity around the things I knew to be true about myself, and I couldn’t deny that I felt a curiosity and a pull to dive deeper into yoga with YTT.

As I broadened my perspective of what a yoga teacher could be, I began to see many possible paths for myself. I am a curious and introspective seeker both internally and out in the world. I crave connection with others, and I strive to make others feel seen, safe, and welcomed. I have a creative mind that channels ideas freely when I feel in flow, and I am a world traveler who values my freedom to explore.

I suppose there wasn’t one thing that inspired me to pursue yoga teacher training; rather, I felt a pull to the practice that grew stronger over the years. As I often questioned and wondered what I was meant to be doing in life, my yoga practice was one constant in which I always found inspiration. I gained curiosity, healing, community, inner peace, and I found infinite possibilities for growth, evolution, and learning. At some point, I could no longer deny my desire to learn more, and I opened my heart to the possibility of being vulnerable and teaching others, and to the idea that I could deepen my relationship with yoga and provide a safe container for others to find the same healing I have found. And as soon as I decided to start looking into training programs and asked my friend for help, OYH basically fell into my lap and I began the training two days later.

I’ve found so much inspiration throughout this training, which has motivated me to push past my mental obstacles. The 13 weeks of YTT felt like drinking from a firehose of information, but I also feel inspired and reinvigorated. Our lectures on anatomy and prop workshops transformed my relationship with asana. Our sequencing and assists workshops with Francesca Bove both pushed me to my edges and sparked my creativity. But I think the most surprising and revealing moments for me were the special moments of vulnerability and connection among everyone in the training.

Every time we shared our journal prompts around the room, I was amazed by the vulnerability of my classmates and teachers. I noticed that in my periods of feeling generally overwhelmed, I could get very narrow-minded in my anxiety around my own life. It was both eye-opening and rewarding to connect with my peers. I am so inspired by each of them, and it has been so rewarding to get to see the unique light in each of them. I think the connections I made with the people during my training caused the most significant shift for me throughout the training. I came into this training (and one of the main reasons I hesitated to begin YTT for so long) worried that the market for teachers is already so oversaturated, so I doubted myself, wondering who I am and questioning what I have to offer. But by seeing the unique gifts of each of the women I met here, I feel so excited to take each of their classes, and I can see a path for each of them. There is space for everyone because everyone is special.

This journey has been so powerful, and I know it will only continue to integrate and reveal itself from here. I have already witnessed shifts and growth within myself, and I know that this is just the catalyst for so much more. I have seen myself push to be courageous and vulnerable in front of a group. I have observed the ways I learn, and how I best integrate my learnings with physical practice. I’ve noticed that by learning more of the history, philosophy, and culture, I have found deeper meaning in the asana practice. And I’ve gained tools that have begun to form daily habits in my personal life: I’ve started incorporating specific up- or down-regulating pranayama techniques into my day, and I’ve noticed myself making more daily intentional choices that are aligned with my yogic values and support my highest good. While I’ve always believed in the yamas and niyamas, I’ve noticed it’s easier to integrate them day-to-day now. I’ve taken time to listen to what my body needs, and thanks to the requirement of taking two classes a week, I now know that my body needs weekly Iyengar or restorative practices. As Francesca and Anna say, in order to be good teachers, we need to nourish and take care of ourselves first, and I have started to integrate and embody this.

I could write endlessly on what I’ve learned and everything I’m grateful for in this training. This has been the most rewarding experience, and even though it’s bittersweet that this special time has ended, I am mostly filled with excitement and gratitude, because I know that this is just the beginning of a new journey. I have met so many incredible teachers, and I have found a new supportive community. I am infinitely grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait for the rest to unfold.

ABOUT ONEYOGAHOUSE

oneyogahouse
90 Furman St
Brooklyn, NY 11201

We are a yoga, pilates, and sound meditation studio located in DUMBO (an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), next door to the 1Hotels in Brooklyn Bridge Park. As a community that prioritizes awakening our bodies, expanding our energy, and bringing movement to life, OYH offers a space designed to uplift and empower practitioners to ground themselves, undergo transformation, ignite their energy, and evolve in their yoga journey.

Driven by a passion for community, connection, and the transformative effects of yoga and meditation, yoga teacher and entrepreneur Anna Haddad founded OYH in 2020, and in the challenging landscape of the global COVID-19 pandemic, opened the Brooklyn location in September of 2021. Over the past several years, she’s built a team of some of New York’s most exceptional instructors. With safety, sustainability, and intentionality prioritized above all else, you can anticipate a yoga experience that’s not only accessible, but also mentally stimulating and geared towards personal growth.

We offer an array of classes suitable for every practice level.

We offer a diverse range of classes suited to practitioners of all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced yogis. Our yoga teachers come from all lineages and studies, from Katonah and Iyengar, to Vinyasa and Ashtanga. Whether you’re drawn to a hot, vigorous flow, a gentle, restorative practice, or a meditative sound therapy session, there’s something for everyone. Each class is thoughtfully designed to cater to different needs and preferences, ensuring that you find the practice that resonates with you.

Our most popular specialty classes include:

THE CENTERED ONE - MAT PILATES

Our pilates classes will challenge you in exercises that chisel your abs, tone your glutes, and sculpt long, lean muscles. You will use your own body weight, yoga blocks, magic circles, and resistance bands.

THE THERAPEUTIC ONE

This class combines a gentle slow flow and restorative yin postures and closes with a deep meditation session to explore the quietude of your mind.

THE FIERY ONE - HOT YOGA

This is a heated Vinyasa flow experience that is intentional, fun, and guided by the rhythm of the breath. Expect lots of movement with a focus on functional exercises. It’s an open-level class that’s powered by radiant infrared panels and an air purification system to minimize airborne dust, pollen, and germs.

THE STUDIOUS ONE - MASTER CLASS

Taught by senior teachers, master classes are an opportunity for intermediate yogis and teachers to deepen their practice through an extended study of the asanas. You’ll incorporate more advanced postures, yoga philosophy, and anatomical education.

THE FOUNDATIONAL ONE

This class breaks down the fundamentals of key yoga postures for both people who have never taken a yoga class and practitioners who have some knowledge of the practice but would like to renew and strengthen their foundation.

THE EMBODIED ONE - SOMATICS

Explore somatic movement exercises to help re-educate the way your brain moves, holds, and senses your muscles. You’ll commence class with an extended savasana and gradually enter into yoga asanas.

THE INTERNAL ONE

In this internal strength class using the Kinstretch® Method, focus on the determinants of your movement (i.e. ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue) rather than the external organization of movement (i.e. specific yoga poses). Through self-assessment, you’ll learn about your current range of motion and exercise more control.

THE ALIGNED ONE

Similar to The Fiery ONE, expect an open-level, but room temperature, Vinyasa class woven with elements of Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, or Katonah Yoga. These yoga classes are intelligently sequenced at a slower, sweeter pace to ease you into the practice, allowing time for your body to adapt to movement. You are sure to break a sweat by building heat from within.

In every class, the teacher will ease you into practice, allowing time for your body to adapt to the flow and temperature of the room. No class is exactly the same, but overall, you can expect emphasis on mindful movement, mobility, alignment, breathwork, and drishti—a focused gaze—cultivating a sense of presence and awareness on the mat. Our focus on breath allows you to deepen your practice, quiet the mind, and experience a profound sense of relaxation and inner peace. You’ll be encouraged to listen to your body, honor its limitations, and explore your edge with compassion.

SOUND MEDITATION

Sound has been used for its therapeutic qualities for centuries. Sound Meditation experiences at OYH will guide you through an experience of pranayama, vocalization, and visualization to prepare for deep listening. You will be encouraged to find a comfortable position, and with eyes closed, take in the sounds emitted from instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, varying chimes and bells, drums, etc. These instruments, intentionally sequenced, create a safe space for participants to enter a meditative state to down-regulate the nervous system and create a sense of ease and clarity.

Our holistic approach to community and wellness.

At OYH, you’re part of a supportive and inclusive community from day one. Whether you attend classes regularly or drop in occasionally, you’ll find camaraderie and encouragement from fellow practitioners and instructors alike. The studio fosters connections beyond the mat, offering workshops, events, retreats, and social gatherings to support local businesses (like brunch and oyster shucking) where you can connect with like-minded individuals and deepen your practice both on and off the mat.

Our holistic approach to wellness extends beyond movement. In addition to regular yoga and pilates classes, the studio offers workshops focused on nutrition, mindfulness, self-care, and personal development. Whether you’re interested in exploring the benefits of Ceremonial Grade Cacao, learning about the Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs) routine, or delving into pelvic floor therapy, there are ample opportunities to learn something new and nourish your body, mind, and soul.

Retreats offer immersive experiences that transcend the boundaries of the studio. ONEYOGAHOUSE retreats serve as rejuvenating getaways designed to allow participants to deepen their practice and forge new connections. Through carefully curated programs, attendees engage in daily yoga, breathwork, functional mobility, journaling, and meditation sessions, alongside modalities such as lymph work, kriyas, and vagal toning. Retreat members also enjoy chef-prepared group meals, outdoor adventures and exploration, cocktail hours, spa services, shopping and cultural trips, and more. Set in beautiful locations like Los Cabos, Mexico, Morocco, North Africa, and Montauk, New York, the retreat landscapes provide serene backdrops for self-reflection and relaxation.
